ARTIST
statement

I am Eleana Farrington, a student at Birmingham City University, studying my final year of my BA Honours Fine Art course. During my time at University, I have had the opportunity to work with many different teams of people, including Tate Liverpool Art Gallery, ranging from curators to art handlers. I was involved in a celebration event for the ‘Illuminating the Wilderness’ exhibition by EXPLORERS Project Art Works. My work explores the idea of social media and how it is presented to us individually. In particular, this focuses on the news that comes across in a personalised manner, using technology designed to mirror what we view and search for online. Using data as material and word documents as my tools, I manipulate data to create paper collages and posters. I’m inspired by Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer who use news, the public sphere and institutional critique in their work. Paper is easy to manipulate and to reproduce. I source the newest trending stories from the internet to create my art. The work uses large scale image backgrounds, with text overlaid. My aim is to inform my audience of what is happening in the world, exposing how the internet can suppress the significance of the information being revealed to us.

2020 | Birmingham School of Art Final Show
To complete my university journey, I have to produce a piece of work to install into the final year degree show, comprising of all the works from everyone in the year.

2019 | ' A Night of Deception and Lies' Live project
As part of an assessment in my Art and Deception module in my second year of university, I had to complete a presentation at the ArtsLab in 1000 Trades. For this, I created a deceptive piece of writing that I read in front of an audience. This piece included false statistics to shock the reader as well as an overall negative attitude and outlook to social media and how it can affect people in different ways.

2017 | Size
